When to take the IELTS exam

Book too early and you waste money; too late and you miss deadlines. Here's how to time it.

Start with a diagnostic mock

Take a full mock 10–12 weeks before your earliest possible test date. The band breakdown shows your gap to the score you need — that gap determines prep length.

Typical preparation timelines

Band 5 → 6.5 often needs 8–12 weeks of focused study. Band 6.5 → 7 may need 4–8 weeks if one module lags. Students starting below band 5 should plan 3–6 months.

Align with university and visa deadlines

Book the official test at least 6 weeks before your application deadline — IELTS results take 3–5 days (CBT) but slots fill fast. Leave one retake buffer if your programme allows.

Signs you're ready

Two consecutive full mocks at or above your target band — with no module more than 0.5 below requirement — suggest readiness. One good mock can be luck; two is a trend.
