IELTS vs CEFR: which test should you take?

What each test measures

Who requires IELTS?
Universities, immigration authorities, and professional registration bodies typically specify IELTS (or equivalent band-score tests). Check your target institution's exact requirement.
Who uses CEFR?
Language schools, secondary schools, and employers in Europe and Central Asia often use CEFR for placement and internal progress. CEFR alone is rarely accepted for UK/Australia visas.
