How to improve IELTS from band 6.5 to 7

The jump from 6.5 to 7 is about precision — not more vocabulary alone.

Writing: move from 'adequate' to 'precise'

Band 7 Writing needs clear position, developed ideas, less common vocabulary used accurately, and complex sentences with few errors. Get examiner feedback on every essay — generic templates cap you at 6.5.

Speaking: fluency without filler overload

Reduce 'um', 'like', 'you know' — replace with brief pauses. Extend answers with one reason and one example. Part 3 needs abstract vocabulary, not just personal stories.

Listening/Reading: eliminate careless errors

At 6.5 you understand most content. Lost points are often spelling, word limits, and rushing the last passage. Drill transfer discipline and time allocation per passage.

One module usually blocks 7.0 overall

Check your mock breakdown — one skill at 6.0 pulls the average down. Focus 70% of remaining prep on that single module for 3–4 weeks.
