IELTS Listening tips for higher bands
Catch spelling errors, predict answers, and stay focused across four timed sections.
Read the questions before the audio starts
You have time to preview each section. Underline keywords, note word limits (ONE WORD ONLY, NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS), and predict answer types — number, name, place, or object.
Spelling and plurals cost real points
Listening is marked strictly. 'Library' not 'libary', 'studies' not 'study' when the speaker said plural. Practise dictation drills and always write what you hear, then check spelling if time allows.
Section 1–4 difficulty curve
Section 1 is a social conversation; Section 4 is an academic lecture. Energy management matters — don't burn focus on Section 1. By Section 3 (multiple speakers) distraction is the main enemy.
Use mock exams, not isolated clips

Transfer answers carefully
On computer-delivered IELTS you type directly. Still double-check question numbers — misaligned answers destroy scores even when you heard everything correctly.
